@ Olsson I appreciate the compliment. I agree that significant differences in interpretation are a major issue. This particular rule was a very tricky one that we went back and forth on a few times. While far from perfect, I think this was the best idea we came up with, but I'm also sure some will disagree. My hope is that in practice, this new rule will have a somewhat opposite effect, and limit what was a bit of a wild west of admin interpretations, to something better grounded.
Before this verbiage, admins have said there is a limit to engagement range, but the limit was 100% up to each admin. Some would say it's 1km, some would say it's 10km, and the rules themselves implied Sofia and Sofia hospital were far enough apart to be considered different locations, which was insane.
We discussed setting the engagement range to 5km hard stop, 1km hard stop, or no engagement range, and the interpretation we ended up with all had significant problems.
The 1km range seemed way too short. It's not uncommon to titan someone 2km away or to end up in a fight that spans 1km, and we didn't want people measuring engagement ranges; it felt tedious and unintuitive.
5KM covered pretty much everything very well, but it meant that an engagement in Neo could carry all the way to Athira which felt a little extreme.
Everything between 1km and 5km just felt like adjusting those sliders between the two but never really resolving the problem of too big of an engagement range makes it feel like a player could get away wit killing someone very much not involved in an engagement, and too short meant it was easy to break the rules while trying to play fair.
The admin's discretion interpretation minimized what was being changed because it's more or less how it worked before. It allowed long engagements and specified that engagements shouldn't be used to target someone 2-3km away who really can't involve themselves with the original situation that started an engagement.
We are going to keep an eye on it to see if it works the way we want or if it causes more issues. I have no doubt there will be some problems, but hopefully, it's a net improvement over what was. Like everything, though, if you or anyone has suggestions on how to improve the rules, feel free to send them along to myself or a Civilian Council rep, and if they have merit, we will discuss them.-
