Don't know how to quote, but what I meant StarKnight was that teachers can teach standards yet make it applicable. Pythagorean theorem is a standard, but that doesn't mean it can't be taught in a useful way. Lots of math is useful, but many teachers stick strictly to standards without making it an engaging experience by showing the uses. That's why schools still fail testing. They ramped up teaching to the standards, but haven't made it an experience that students can find to be useful.
