If you don't want to have something as complicated to use as an IDE such as eclipse, you could look at Atom. It's just a basic code text editor with a few cool tools to use but has an intuitive design that is great for learning. Super easy to set up. Also works with GitHub.

can confirm Atom is good, despite some dumb default settings which you'll have to change
