Non biased experience from a new player - 1/10

Recommended Posts

Having only purchased Arma 3 a few months ago and joining the server for the first time, I was killed on sight multiple times without any engagement, had all my vehicles stolen, and was robed repeatedly until I had nothing left. I have to honestly say that joining Olympus resulted in a horrible gaming experience for a new player. The lack of server admins and police makes for a gang-ruled warzone with no regard to the server rules, and no fear of repercussion from server management.

Players, such as those in the "s |" gang seemed to be the root of the problem. After grinding out some money, I managed to buy a helicopter and took it to the casino where I was shot out of it instantly, and had it stolen as I laid on the ground watching the respawn countdown unable to do anything.

After joining other Arma 3 Life servers and telling other players about my experience, I found that MANY other players have had the same experience with Olympus, so this is not just a one-off case of players breaking server rules.

There were many civilians who were kind and helpful, but who also fell victim to the "s |" gang multiple times before logging off of the server - presumably for good.

I am no way trying to bash "s |" gang as if the roles were reversed and I was playing on a server with no administration or player moderation, I would likely do the same thing.

This server needs more police force and more active admins/moderators to keep these gangs in check, and keep them operating within the server rules.

Unfortunately I will not be rejoining Olympus for some time, and I hope this article will be seen by server moderators and some sort of action be taken to prevent other new players from a similar experience.

Best of luck,

Dayton

Record the rule break then submit a report

Honestly I don't blame this kid for making a post about it. There was a guy running around just tasing, restraining and blindfolding players for no reason other than I quote "just trolling". When it comes to certain things the server is not fun for new players. I was on civ the other day trying to get a new player set up with what runs to do and the keys he needed to unlock his vehicle and what not. He gets in his car, drives 15 feet and is shot and killed for no reason. When new players are treated the way they are there's a reason people don't come back to the server. I've watched time and time again as new players are abused not only by Silla but by other people as well and they never return. Majority of them A. don't record and B. aren't going to waste their time submitting a report when they can join other servers instead. It's that first hour that defines whether or not a player is going to continue to return or they are going to go elsewhere.

Is there a fix? Not really unless you make Kavala a green zone which we all know will never ever happen.

Problem #1: Spawning in Kav when you are effectively told NOT to spawn there

Problem #2: Letting Silla see you while you're in the town you're not supposed to be in

Problem #3: Almost every single "problem" you've described is a clear case of "wrong place-wrong time" and/or a lack of understanding of how the server works. You're not always gonna win every situation

Problem #4: This server's been around for about 7 years going through an ever-changing dynamic of players and staff. What are considered "norms" in game are most likely not going to change, especially the things that aren't technically wrong. If you can't fancy the server or find any enjoyment in it, maybe taking some time to consider that it isn't meant for you or wasn't what you were expecting instead of blaming the players, staff or the server

A very big thing for newer players to the server is for them to make friends and try to join or create a gang. If you play solo you will unfortunately suffer the consequences usually. There are normally bigger gangs like Silla ( s | ). I know when I first joined the server I had my friend to play with right away and it was just us two playing almost everyday. Until we eventually joined a gang and learned how the server works a lot better.

There is a key factor with people breaking rules against you. It is VERY important to be able to record and report them, admins and mods are not gonna be available to spectate everyone 24/7. There are currently 108 people on the server,  there are roughly 20 administrative staff members it is quite literally impossible for us to be able to witness every rule break. Hence why we have the reporting system, you record a rule break, upload it to YouTube or something, then you submit it and we deem if it there is indeed a rule broken or not and the person who did so will be punished.

You would honestly be surprised by how many staff members play, we just normally don't play under our actual names. There is a message staff button and if any of us are on we usually try and assist them as best we can, even if someone's  truck is just stuck on a rock we will help them out. We always try to help out new players unfortunately we cannot help everyone.

Silla is probably one of the biggest gangs on Olympus right now and I'm sure they break plenty of rules, however we can't ban them for it unless someone reports it or if we witness it first hand. Even if we do see it first hand we can't always ban for it, for example: If you were to get RDM'd by a Silla member, we wouldn't know if he texted or engaged you in an area where we weren't near. Hence the whole reasoning of submitting a player report.

The police force is quite large, as seen from the CoC: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X6UMq3Ofu8MHPLZl46L0kNSCRW8OFcUGhi4zuIt3qKc/edit#gid=1829147935

However, most of the people that play this server are either in school or have to work. So it is kind of random to how many cops are on at certain times, sometimes there will be 10+, other times there will be 2 or 0. It is completely out of the staff and Sr. APD's hands. We can't force people to play.

Anyways, sorry to here about your experience, hope you come around again and give it another try. I highly recommend trying to find a gang or friend group to play with.

The mouth breathing retards who initiate every unarmed naked player they see in Kavala are the reason I just outright quit multiple times as well but I do promise it gets better if you hang in there, try other cities, and meet new people. Once you get enough hours you can join a faction and continue to meet people who you can play with and it will get more fun overtime.

I know it’s tough to start new. I see it everyday. New players wanting to know how it works and what to do to have fun and make sure they don’t get robbed or insta-killed. Problem is, both of those things are impossible. You will encounter rule breakers every server you go to. Staff really can’t be on watching every single player. However when we get those reports we make sure to handle those rule breakers accordingly. It’s quite the effective system.

Current staff are actually very active we just usually don’t play under our real profile names. We are mostly always watching was much as possible and helping everyone we can.

Ive been here since 2015. I guarantee you there isn’t a more dedicated staff team out there than us. Give us a chance. We might impress you 😉

Olympus makes only the most elite arma gamers

Mecca for gamers baby 🙏

On a real note though, in my experience of the server, it has always been better to play with a large group of people. The more the better (in most cases). But you need to find something to chase in the server. You need to set a goal. Get t5 vigi, get into a cartel gang, become an apd member/R&R member, get support team. The list goes on and on, and the more you sink into the server the more it can give back to you. and you have to know as well that a lot of people on here grew up playing this server, Pulling multiple all nighters running frogs or mushrooms, and for a lot of those people its something to remind us of different times that we can never get back. All (most) of us have matured through and around Olympus, so after a while it becomes a sort of twisted home. The same faces stick around and most perms are never perms. And id never want it any different.

Want friendly?

Go modded.
I can't mention which specific server cuz I'll just get a warning point, but go on battlemetrics and look for the top 10 arma 3 servers. I'm sure you'll find one with a good playerbase.

Vanilla has become a cesspool of retards that came from gmod. Wouldn't bother starting from scratch.

You're civ council, well then help the man! 😂

It's honestly pretty terrible that this is the common reaction for the new players. It isn't hard to take a moment and give a new player a hand It might make all the difference.

Make some hours then apply for R&R. Kiss the civ grind goodbye and hello to being robbed "less" lol (seriously, R&R > Civ, way more laid back)

Yeah if you put in bare minimums as far as times go.
